Notes : The Reserve Bank of Australia introduced a brighter coloured $5 note on April 24, 1995. This was done to make the new note easier to distinguish from the $10 polymer bank note. They also made the numeral 5 on the note a lot bolder, as well as incorporating orientation bands at the top and bottom of the note.

Variation

The original orientation bands that were used were approximately seven lines wide. When a number of the printing plates were damaged, a variation in the number of bands occurred. This was due to the new plates incorporating artwork from an earlier proof design of the note. The most notable difference of the new notes were in orientation bands, which were much narrower. This revised note had a print run of 13 million in 1995. The variation notes have a prefix of HC 95 to KC 95.
