Catalogue   Printing   Errors

Introduction

Printing errors in catalogues are very rare. Those that do happen may not affect pricing, but may just cause confusion. That was the case with the 15th McDonald's catalogue.

The mystery   "19"   listings

In The Pocket Guide to Australian Coins and Banknotes FIFTEENTH EDITION by Greg McDonald we had the situation where the wrong Rennicks numbers were used. These were
  • r319 [Page 432]
  • r419 [Page 436]
  • r519 [Page 439]
These Renniks numbers do not exist, as shown in the 22nd [latest] edition of the Rennicks Coin and Banknote Values catalogue.
  • r320 [Page 184]
  • r420 [Page 188]
  • r520 [Page 190]
We believe that this error was caused by the issue of r219. The RBA issued a commemorative $5 note in January 2001 in celebration of the Centenary of Australia's Federation. As this release did not extend to other denomination banknotes it was given a Renniks nimber of r219. All other denomination banknotes skipped the "19" series.

Two of the above errors were rectified in the [current] Sixteenth Edition.

The [SIXTEENTH] edition failed to correct the errors for r519 [Page 410]

The most surprising thing regarding these errors was that they were not picked up by many people. Such is the popularity of this publication that everything is accepted without question. Every eBay/OZtion seller and nearly every website [of highly regarded professional dealers] carried these mistakes.

As mentioned above, some of the errors have now been rectified, but as with every printing error, it takes at least 12 months to make a correction.

The [SEVENTEENTH] edition has correct the errors relating to r519 notes [Page 410]
